Best in the World: Why Australian wool and Merino wool Print E-mail
Here at Authentic Ugg Boots, we're proud to say that all our boots are made with 100% genuine, natural Australian Merino sheepskin.  That's because only in Australia can you find the world's best, most luxurious, finest quality Merino wool.  And we won't rest unless we know our customers are getting the very best.

As the world's top producer of wool, Australia produces a full 1/4 of the world's total wool.  Over the course of the past two centuries, Australian wool has had a tremendous effect on the world.  It's dressed soldiers through major wars, it's inspired major fashion innovations through the work of designers like Yves Saint Laurent and Coco Chanel, and it's kept our worldwide apparel industries thriving.  A natural, fully biodegradable, breathable and naturally flame resistant material, wool can absorb up to 1/3 its own weight in water.  Thus, it's understandable why we at Authentic Ugg Boots would rely on Australian wool to make our products.

However, we don't just use any Australian wool for our products.  At Authentic UGG Boots, we're committed to using only the finest quality Australian Merino wool.

So what's so special about Merinos?  To start, Merino sheep are famous for having the finest, softest wool of all sheep breeds.  Their heavy fleece and fine wool have made them a luxury commodity all over the world.  Australia is home to approximately 100 million sheep, a full 88% of which are Merino sheep, according to January, 2007 statistics.

However, Merino sheep aren't actually native to Australia.  Rather, Merino sheep were first developed and bred in Spain.  There, the soft, white wool of Merino sheep was so highly valued that before the 18th century, not only was it illegal to export Merino sheep from the country, but such a crime was punishable by death!  Fortunately, Spain did eventually open up the Merino sheep trade in the 18th century.  In 1797, the first Spanish Merinos arrived in Australia by way of South Africa.

It wasn't long before the Australian wool industry took off.  By 1830, for example, close to 2 million sheep were being bred in Australia.  Over time, the Merino sheep breed adapted to the Australian climate.  Coupled with selective breeding, this meant that Merino wool became yet softer and finer over time.  In other words, the Merino wool we enjoy today is truly the most luxurious Merino wool in history.

At Authentic UGG Boots, we celebrate the just over 200-year-old Australian Merino wool industry and are deeply honored to call ourselves a part of it.  When we say our boots our made with 100% genuine and natural Australian Merino sheepskin, we're not just making a statement; we're making a promise.  A promise that we will offer you nothing less than the absolute best.  It's a promise you can count on.  We guarantee that our luxury boots use only Australian Merino wool and sheepskin.

Only the best.  Only Authentic UGG Boots .
